What is tasty in confectionery in India?
It's a matter of taste. You have to try, Indian sweets evoke different reactions from different people.:)
I didn't like much, as everything is very fatty. I enjoyed the candies like toffees (they look like unwrapped toffees with nuts inside) and a mix of nuts with raisins in some syrup (sold as pressed balls).
In my opinion - nothing. Indians have a strange attitude towards sweets. The sweeter, the tastier, the main principle does not appeal to me at all. Everything is too cloying.
I forgot what it's called, those white crumbly tiles - sugar boiled in milk. You'll swallow your tongue, it's so delicious. I'm not really fond of sweets, but I could eat this and eat this. By the way, it's not hellishly sweet.
In Karnataka, there is something like a pastry made from a mass that looks like our semolina. Very tasty. And in Choral Ghat, we tried something similar to a sweet milk soup with vermicelli, can't get enough.
It depends on your level of exposure. If you have a lot of experience, you won't find anything remarkable in India, just the usual assortment of sticky sweets made from milk and jaggery. Sticky, cloyingly sweet, and quickly becomes boring. The pastries in good cafes are decent, but nothing extraordinary.
