English is quite common, even in the most unexpected places there is always someone who speaks it and will always help.

By the way, yes, although I can't say that English is widely spoken, sometimes you go to places that are not at all touristy and they respond to you in clear English and help you out. I recently met a girl who runs a curry stall, which is clearly aimed at locals; she said she used to work in the States.
